The Small Things That Bring You Back
Healing doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it looks like a walk. A candle. A piece of music that reaches the places words can’t.
We tend to wait for the big moment—the breakthrough, the turning point, the morning we wake up and everything finally makes sense.
And while those moments do come, in my experience, the return to yourself rarely announces itself dramatically. It tends to arrive quietly, in the small things, if you are paying close enough attention.
A particular quality of light on an autumn afternoon that makes you stop walking and just breathe it in. The smell of something that carries you back to a time when you felt safe and fully yourself. Moving your body in a way that feels like freedom rather than obligation. A conversation with someone who genuinely sees you, that leaves you feeling warmer than when it began.
These things are not trivial. They are not distractions from the real work of healing. They are the thread back.
They are the small, consistent reminders that you are still here, still alive, still capable of being moved and delighted and nourished by this world.
When life feels heavy—and there will be days when it does—I want to invite you to resist the urge to wait until you feel better before you begin to tend to yourself. Tending to yourself is how you begin to feel better.
It doesn’t require grand gestures or significant change. It requires only the willingness to notice what makes you feel a little more like you, and to choose it.
Start small. One thing today. Not as a reward for getting through the hard parts. Not when you’ve finally earned it. Now, as you are, because you are worth tending to.
What is one small thing you could do today that would make you feel a little more like yourself?
