The Quiet Grief of Losing Yourself
It doesn’t always happen all at once. It’s gradual.
And one day, you look up and wonder where you went.
For many women, losing themselves didn’t happen in a single moment. It happened in the small, daily surrenders—saying yes when you meant no, shrinking your needs to make room for everyone else’s, and slowly letting go of the things that made you feel most alive.
A creative pursuit quietly dropped. A friendship allowed to fade. A version of yourself left somewhere at the side of the road because there simply wasn’t room for her.
By the time the transition comes—the divorce, the loss, the life that cracks open—the grief isn’t only for what you’ve lost externally. It’s for the woman you quietly left behind somewhere along the way.
The one with opinions and passions and desires of her own. The one who existed before she became everything to everyone else.
That grief is real. And it deserves to be honoured, not hurried through. Not managed, minimised, or tidied away before it’s had time to breathe.
But here is what I know to be true: you are not gone.
You have simply been buried beneath the weight of everything you’ve been carrying. And the path back to yourself, while it takes courage, is not as long or as complicated as it feels in this moment.
It begins with one honest question. One quiet space to listen to the answer. One moment of choosing yourself—not instead of everyone else, but alongside them. Slowly, gently, and with great compassion for how far you’ve come.
You have always been in there. It’s time to come home to yourself.
